3,400-Year-Old Statues Unearthed In Egypt: "

CAIRO — Egypt's Culture Ministry says a team of archaeologists has unearthed two large red granite statues at the mortuary temple of one Egypt's most powerful pharaohs who ruled nearly 3,400 years ago.

A ministry statement Tuesday says the team discovered a 13 foot (4 meter) statue of Thoth, the ancient god of wisdom and the top part of a statue of Pharaoh Amenhotep III standing next to another god.

They were both discovered buried in the pharaoh's mortuary temple on the west bank of the Nile in the southern city of Luxor.

The head of another Amenhotep III statue was found on Feb. 28 and two other statues made of black granite were found in March 2009 in the same temple.
